John D. Floyd
Hernando County, Florida
The design strives to reflect and reinforce the eagerness, whim and vitality of its young occupants. The school becomes a community complete with nodes, neighborhoods and “town green.” Lively colors and delicate exposed pipe towers are contrasted against simple, solid masses to create an almost toy-like ambiance. John D. Floyd Elementary has received three awards for design excellence: one each from the Florida Association of the American Institute of Architects; the Florida Central Chapter of the American Institute of Architects; and the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs. Its success was further complimented when the School Board commissioned our firm to repeat the design as Pine Grove Elementary School.
